Jennifer Ashley - How to Catch the Reader's (and Editor's) Attention - before they read a word. We all know about the "hook" of the first line, but what most readers (and editors) see first is your title and blurb. A catchy title and a strong, intriguing premise will interest an editor to request your full manuscript, and, once you're published, intrigue a reader into picking up the book. Jennifer Ashley will talk about the importance of a good title and how to make sure premise grabs the editor and doesn't let go. Jennifer Ashley is the USA Today bestselling author of 20 novels, which incluce romances, mysteries, and mainstream fiction, writing under the names Jennifer Ashley, Allyson James, and Ashley Gardner.
July
Vijaya Schartz - SENSUALITY IN THE SUBTLE ROMANCE - MAKING SCENES SIZZLE WITHOUT GRAPHIC SEX. As erotic romance becomes more popular, authors and readers often wonder about what constitutes a sensual romance as opposed to an erotic romance. What does an editor mean by making an action scene hotter? Romance has branched into many subgenres, even the least expected, like sci-fi and thriller romance. But how do you keep the sensual factor going in a suspense scene? How do you keep your audience hot and bothered without taking any clothes off? How do you negotiate the curves of a steamy love scene without falling into the abyss of XXX adult rating? It's an art that will widen your audience and keep your readers turning the pages and yearning for more. Award-winning author, and Golden Quill finalist, Vijaya Schartz, has written seven novels, one novella and several short stories.

Laurie Schnebly Campbell - Challenging Couples in Love
While it's easy to create conflict between a hero and heroine whose kingdoms are at war, everyday life can be a tougher setting for plausible conflicts...especially when the hero and heroine are both lovable characters. But the same conflicts that trouble real-life couples -- plus the same solutions recommended by marriage counselors -- can work equally well for fictional couples. Laurie Schnebly Campbell draws on her own (and her marriage-counselor mother's) experience with couples, outlining ways to create tension between Mr. & Ms. Perfect...and ways to relieve it in time for the happy ending. She's given this workshop for RWA National and for Tucson's first chapter meeting. Her favorite comments came from one writer who said, "You saved my novel," followed by another who said, "You saved my marriage!"
